Our History

History Highlights of
Naugatuck Valley Community Church

Naugatuck Valley Community Church (NVCC) began as a mission of Southbury Baptist Church through the church starting efforts of Tim and Liz Leggett. Six months prior to the first worship service, home Bible studies were formed; different areas of Naugatuck were surveyed through a Community Religious Survey; summer Neighborhood Bible Clubs were conducted for children; and an 8,000 piece mail-out brochure was sent out to all Naugatuck residents inviting them to the first worship service.

Naugatuck Valley Community Church held its first worship service on September 23, 1990. Thirty-one people were in attendance. The meeting place for NVCC for its first year was St. Michael's Episcopal Church Parish Hall. After the first year NVCC, in a step of faith, moved to a new meeting space on the second floor of a commercial plaza at 1183 New Haven Road -- Rt. 63 Professional Center. By the end of 1994, NVCC had outgrown its space at 1183 New Haven Road. God provided 7,200 sq. ft. of space at the Beacon Valley Business Center -- 1221 New Haven Road. In December of 2004, NVCC moved to 159 Church Street in downtown Naugatuck sharing a space with Igreja Comunidade Batista, its present location.

Throughout its history, NVCC has been blesssed with partnership on mission with other churches and individuals. Twenty-five plus churches or associations of churches have partnered with us through the years to conduct Neighborhood Bible Clubs, Community Surveys, Community Concerts, Vacation Bible School and Sports Camps. Fourteen student summer missionaries have joined us in the summers working with our children and youth. From 1990 till the present in 2006, we have had 173 baptisms. The average worship attendance has grown from 23 in 1990 to 85 presently in 2009. In February of 1998 we sponsored a Brazilian Portuguese speaking mission and called Jose Montiero and family to be the church planter/pastor. Under Pastor Jose's leadership, Igreja Comunidade Batista has grown from 4 in 1998 to its present attendance of 80. To God be the glory for the things He has done!

As Naugatuck Valley Community Church presses on into the 21st centruy we will continue to seek to fulfill our vision -- "To work together to build a relevant, multi-cultural, regional church in the greater Naugatuck Valley area through reaching out to the unchurched and unbelieving and leading them to become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ." With God's help we look forward to working together to make this vision a reality. We hope you will join us in this journey!
